Often our clients will come to us with a flyer, magazine, newspaper ad or newsletter and expect us to duplicate the “look” of the printed material into their club website design. Just because something looks good in print or as a stand-alone pdf does not necessarily mean that is will translate well on the web.  In fact, I’d wager to say that anything that is a great print design is likely to be a lousy web design and vice versa.  Here’s why.

We chose to write about email etiquette, because it has become a very popular mode of communication among internet users, which is a large segment of the population.  

Since we are web developers, just about all of our clients use email as a means of communication with their club members, friends, family and other associates.  For some people this is a new way of communication.  Others are so familiar with it that they’ve become sloppy.  If you follow the same guidelines for writing your emails as you would for writing a letter, your emails will come across as concise and thoughtful communications.

The National Institute on Aging tells us that within the past five years, the number of older adults using the web has increased over 55% making this the fastest growing internet user group.   In addition to sending and receiving email, older adults search the web for health, financial, religious or spiritual information and information about hobbies.  As the baby boomers age, the number of older adults using the internet will continue to grow, so it’s important to tailor your club’s website to this growing demographic.

Aristotle once said, “The soul can not think without pictures.”  Likewise, your club web site is not going to be very successful without picture photos. 

We get lots of questions about posting photos on our sites:

  • How many pictures can we have on the web site?
  • How big do the pictures need to be?
  • How do I size pictures to fit? 
  • Etc., etc., etc.

Realizing that most clubs (unless they are photography clubs) have limited knowledge of how to manage photos, let’s discuss a few best practices for successful use of pictures on your web site.

So your club has decided that you would like to solicit sponsors for a particular event or for all club functions.  As stated in my previous entry the most important thing to remember is to treat sponsorship as a business relationship and outline, clearly up front, exactly what the potential sponsor will receive for his cash, services or goods donation.
